City Mission of Schenectady
The City Mission of Schenectady is dedicated to serving the poor and homeless. They provide food services, community outreach, men’s discipleship, women and children’s programs, transitional housing, and vocational training.
The Mission also operates thrift stores that open to the community that has gently used items for purchase. The Thrift Stores and Distribution Center combine to make up what they call “Industrial Ministries”. The Distribution Center houses merchandise processing and clothing salvage operations. These provide job skill training for residents and revenue to help support the ministries of City Mission. Thrift Stores sell donated furniture, clothing, bricbrac, housewares, appliances, shoes, books and toys to support ministries of City Mission. LifeSong volunteers weekly to inspect and sort the clothing and other items that will be used to stock the shelves in the thrift store.
Daily the Mission provides meals in to several in need in their dining hall. The mission of the Food Services Department has three parts: To support the Discipleship Program; To provide good nutrition; To consistently deliver excellent service. There is much preparation involved with feeding the community. LifeSong is delighted to volunteer every Thursday at the dining hall assisting with food prep for the lunch and dinnertime meals.
